New Wave Mentorship Program

NGHA is proud to announce a new mentorship program to develop the next generation of coaches. With New Wave, selected U15 and U18 players will be paired up with younger Wildcats teams, where you’ll join the coaching environment as a mentor and coach-in-training. Selected participants will work alongside an adult coach and learn how to:

  • Work with younger players
  • Demonstrate and teach hockey skills
  • Lead drills and small groups
  • Give positive feedback and encouragement
  • Build confidence and leadership skills
  • Understand what goes into planning and running a practice
  • Explore whether coaching is something you’d like to pursue in the future

Participants do not need to know how to coach already. The program is designed for players who are interested in learning and growing. Participants can earn volunteer hours while giving back to the hockey community.

What Can Participants Expect?

  • New Wave participants will receive:
  • An introduction to coaching and leadership
  • A Coach & Leadership Notebook to help set goals and track experiences
  • Support throughout the season from the New Wave Program Lead and facilitation team
  • Opportunities to learn from experienced female coaches and mentors
  • A mid-season check-in with other New Wave participants
  • A final reflection and celebration of your experience

What is the Commitment?

Participants will join their assigned younger team beginning November 1 and participate throughout the season. They’ll work with your adult coach to determine how they can best contribute at practices. Their role will grow as your confidence, experience and interest develop.

Who Should Apply?

We’re looking for players who are:

  • Interested in coaching, leadership or working with younger players
  • Positive and supportive teammates
  • Responsible and willing to learn
  • Comfortable taking on new challenges
  • Interested in giving back to the hockey community

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

If New Wave sounds like something you’d like to explore, we encourage you to apply! Applications are due: October 4.

The application will ask you about your hockey experience, leadership interests, goals, community involvement and why you’d like to participate in New Wave.

A selection committee will review applications and select the participants for this year's pilot program. Successful applicants will be notified by October 18-19 and will be matched with a participating younger team.
